A Plethora of Animals

Journal Notes from a Zoo Docent

Zoo maps are carefully designed to allow visitors to find their way around the park without getting lost and to help them locate the various animals. These carefully designed maps often fail in their purpose. They are complex and cluttered with extraneous information. Therefore, I was not particularly surprised when a young visitor carrying such a map approached me one day and asked: "Hey mister docent person! How come I only see three cheetahs in the Kenya display?"

"Because," I cleverly replied, " there are only three cheetahs in the Kenya display."

She took another puzzled look at the map. Gave it a few shakes and said, "Well, it’s written right here in this Kansas City zoo guide pamphlet thingy I got at the front gate that there are sixteen cheetahs in the Kenya area. Now where are the rest?" She held the "World Traveler" souvenir guide in front of my eyes and pointed at the evidence.

I took the map, puzzled over the animal inventory momentarily and then replied, "The table may be somewhat misleading. The number which precedes the name of each animal at the zoo actually corresponds to a location on the adjacent zoo map showing where the animal may be found. Cheetahs, for example, are located in area 16 on the map."

"Oh.... In that case, I suppose you don't have forty-two tigers either."

"No, we don't."
